HOK skating into Turin for Winter Olympics

HOK sport architecture's latest design is hosting its first ever events this month at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin.

The €39m Oval Lingotto - where the speed skating events are taking place - is over 220m long, 110m wide and 16m high, features a 400m long track and has a seating capacity of 8,000.

The structure had to meet three key criteria in its design: to guarantee high-speed skating performances; to provide a legacy for the local community, for both winter and summer months; and to improve the local environment as an integral part of the urban redevelopment.

It features a gently arching roof curving from east to west which is supported on a steel structure consisting of free spanning spine trusses which lend a vaulted effect to the interior.

The roof is suspended without intermediate supports, in order to create unbroken sightlines and a single free area.

The main east facade is penetrated by a series of 'pods' which house offices, meeting rooms and conference facilities, and features a raking facade pierced by ventilation louvers under a massive cantilevered overhang.

Upon completion of the Winter Olympics, the building will provide a world class exhibition centre as well as an ice skating sports venue for the winter season in subsequent years.

Provision has been made within the roof structure to accommodate sliding cross wall and acoustic curtains, allowing the auditorium to be converted into three halls.

In sports mode, the facility will provide seating for 2,000 spectators.
