Putting CanDo in the picture

Leicester-based design firm Haley Sharpe has been working on a feasibility study into a software system developed by CanDo Interactive that allows a non-technical person to create their own 3D art gallery.

Aimed at art galleries, museums, individual artists and art services, it allows users to take digital pictures of their artwork and - using a drag-and-drop graphical interface - choose their preferred room layout and the location for each individual picture.

The software then dynamically creates a fully interactive 3D environment for the artwork. Options are also available for tagging each picture with information and pricing.

Haley Sharpe's study found a clear market opportunity for the product with all sectors of the art gallery marketplace, from major public and private galleries to relevant associated businesses and individuals - over 140,000 companies, people and institutions in the fields of art, the art trade and museums worldwide.

The key target markets identified were the USA, Germany, France, the UK and Italy, which between them account for almost 50 per cent of all museums and public galleries, 58 per cent of all private galleries, 60 per cent of all major art and antiques fairs, 60 per cent of all auctioneers and 72 per cent of all restorers.

The report concluded that 'there is an increasing willingness to embrace technology and recognition of the growing importance of websites in enhancing access to gallery collections and art works and its value as a business sales tool'.

CanDo aims to market the product at three pricing levels, the most affordable for the individual artist, with a sliding scale for public galleries/museums and commercial art galleries.

Based in Ireland, CanDo has spent the last three years developing interactive 3D technologies that can be delivered through the web and on CD. It is currently producing a business plan for the new 3D product to attract investors and obtain funding.
