Thorn throwing light on the Ricoh Arena

The £113m multi-purpose Ricoh Arena complex in Coventry features a comprehensive lighting scheme created by Thorn Lighting.

Since opening for business, the development - with its state-of-the-art conference, banqueting, exhibition, hotel and sports facilities - has proved a huge success. It has acted as a catalyst for the regeneration in the north of the city, transforming a 40 acre gasworks site into one of the finest built stadiums in Britain with its distinctive continuous roofscape providing all round visibility for 32,000 seated spectators.

One hundred and twenty Mundial floodlights, housing 2kW linear metal halide lamps, have been installed on the roofline of the asymmetric bowl. These provide an average horizontal illuminance of 1200 lux over the pitch, with the installation of the equipment along the roof saving the need for additional columns.

The floodlighting is fully switched to cater for a variety of sporting and musical events and is designed to current UEFA recommendations. Taylor Report safety requirements are met with more than 1,000 emergency and safety luminaires, fitted on the underside of the roof, under stand concourses and stairways, and on escape routes and walkways.

Low energy interior luminaires are selected throughout to build a succession of lit spaces, especially in the internal 'street'. General lighting is provided by 2x26W energy efficient Chalice 190 downlights with a mix of direct and indirect lighting from 150W Qba metal halide floodlights 'washing' the walls to add visual interest.

Notable is the use of over 100m of long life, cold cathode (white 4000K) from Kemps Neon on the underside of the ground's two main stairways and on bulkheads on the first floor area. Thorn says that the overall lighting effect would otherwise have been merely functional, rather than the attractive visual appearance which has been created.

A feature of the West Stand is a 69-bedroom hotel, the rooms of which can be converted and used as hospitality boxes on event days. Lighting is a combination of low energy Chalice downlights, with sparkle being provided by hundreds of low voltage Lightstream halogen downlights.
