A lighting system that simulates natural sunlight

The CoeLux system reproduces tropical, Mediterranean or Nordic light
Suitable for all types of indoor architecture, CoeLux is a new lighting system based on nanotechnology which artificially reproduces the light and appearance of the sun and sky.
The system consists of skylight- and window-like constructions made of polymer sheets and features LEDs and a thin layer of transparent nanoparticles. The result is a natural-looking simulation of sunlight, offering a sense of daylight and shadow.
Company founder Paolo Di Trapani, a physicist at the University of Insubria, developed the technology over a period of 10 years.
There are currently three versions of the CoeLux system. CoeLux 60 aims to reproduce tropical light, with a 60° beam offering the maximum luminance contrast of light and shadow. CoeLux 45 features a 45° ceiling beam that offers an equal balance of light and shade, and recreates a Mediterranean sky. Finally, CoeLux 30 simulates the warm, grazing light of a Nordic sun.
One challenge for architects installing the system is that the units need to be deeply recessed in order to provide the intended light effects.
Among possible applications, Italy-based CoeLux lists fitness centres, hotels and museums as types of building that could potentially benefit from the system.
