Stretching exercises are universally recommended but getting the benefits from them can be a challenge.

There is a seemingly bewildering variety of exercises to choose from and some involve positions which are awkward and uncomfortable for the less flexible.

Certain exercises are also difficult to perform effectively, an example being those for the hip and thigh muscles where the stretching movement can be incorrectly transmitted to the pelvis and lumbar spine. Consequently the regime may not produce the anticipated results.

From the company of the same name, Range3D is a new product which has been specifically developed to make stretching straightforward.

Managing Director Hugo Broadbent says it is intended to complement cardiovascular and strength training equipment to provide for an all-round conditioning programme.

The body is supported in a comfortable and stable position and the design ensures that the legs are moved in the correct anatomical planes.

Each exercise starts from neutral, making the device suitable for all levels of flexibility, and users will quickly become familiar with the simple controls. The six muscle groups of the hip joint are isolated with no adjustment needed between the exercises.

The range of motion can be measured electronically and displayed on a digital console to give accurate feedback on progress.

Range3D aims to offer a facility for a dedicated stretching session, either as a cool-down or to develop flexibility, and can also cater for groups such as martial artists, gymnasts and dancers who require a high degree of joint mobility.
