AU$186m facelift for Sydney Cricket Ground
BY Pete Hayman

Work on a new AU$186m (£123m, EUR149m, US$191m) pavilion development at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is to start following the end of the international cricket season next month.

The second phase of the SCG's Masterplan will involve the construction of a new four-level structure, with the MA Noble; Bradman; and Daily Messenger stands all to be replaced.

It is thought that work will get underway "immediately" following the Australia v India one day international on 26 February, with completion scheduled for January 2014.

The new pavilion will include 85 per cent covered seating; improved circulation to all levels and associated visitor amenities; and a dedicated cricket media and corporate level.

Dining room and bar areas, including a roof terrace, are also proposed as part of the scheme, along with one of the largest video screens to be installed at an Australian sports venue.

Cox Richardson are behind the design of the scheme, which also involves Arup; MI Associates; and AECOM.

The New South Wales (NSW) state government will contribute AU$86m (£57m, EUR69m, US$88m), while the federal government and SCG Trust will each invest AU$50m (£33m, EUR40m, US$51.3m).

SCG Trust chair Rodney Cavalier said: "The Noble, Bradman and Messenger stands no longer meet the requirements of the modern day spectator.

"Additions, renovations and other upgrades have not greatly improved the viewing environment, access and egress for spectators, particularly the elderly and the disabled."

NSW premier Barry O'Farrell added: "The new development will ensure spectators have fantastic facilities, while preserving the history of the Members and Ladies Stands."
