'Luxury rowing studio' Engine Room to open in a converted church

A boutique indoor rowing and personal training studio – described as the first of its kind in the UK – will open in a Grade II-listed, converted church in the affluent Marylebone area of London this month.

The Engine Room will feature Technogym's new Skillrow rowers and will have a focus on providing technique-driven indoor rowing sessions in a luxury setting.

All guests will be required to undertake a ‘Rowing 101’ induction prior to their participation in any class offering.

According to founder and owner Chris Heron, the inductions will enhance the consumer experience, ensuring every member is made aware of rowing techniques and the "benefits the class will offer them in return".

The Engine Room will also offer body fat testing and display a range of metrics during the class to motivate members and to provide them with accurate and data-backed results.

Heron – a fitness industry veteran who qualified as a fitness instructor in 1997 and has worked as a personal trainer and coach – has partnered with British rower and Olympic gold medalist, Matthew Tarrant, who will be leading several classes.

Tarrant will also offer advice and guidance on rowing technique and has assisted in the development of two distinct classes: Beats and Breathe.

Beats offers "heart thumping tunes and flashing lights" while Breathe will allow guests to improve their technique and fitness, alongside professionals and experts.

The space has been designed by Bergman Interiors – recent winners of the 2018 FRAME award for the Best Health Club of the Year for their work with BXR.

The Engine Room is hoping to tap into the growing consumer interest in indoor rowing.

"The Engine Room will bring together the unparalleled combination of proven science, world class delivery and leading technology," said Heron.

"We aim to provide personal, tailored coaching to enable each attendee to achieve their goals and better their performance.

"Our trainer portfolio will ensure every member will know what to expect from the class they attend."
