'Sports city' plans revealed for Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium

Madrid city council (Ayuntamiento de Madrid) has set out plans to develop a number of sports facilities in the surrounding areas of the existing Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

The "sports city" project, in the eastern San Blas-Canillejas district, is led by the council and is set to transform a site which was originally earmarked for an Olympic park during the city's failed bids for the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

Facilities will range from grassroots sports centres to venues capable of hosting major events.

Some of the facility projects look to utilise the infrastructure put in place for the Olympic bids. These include the partially-built aquatics centre, which has stood derelict since 2010.

In a statement, the council announced that the existing, Olympic bid-related plans for the site will be amended in order to "define a framework for the development of a city of sport, which will serve the surrounding areas and all of Madrid".

In total, the development will cover around 1.2million sq m and will "take advantage of the architectural attractiveness" of the Wanda Metropolitano – home of Atlético de Madrid football club.

The 68,000-capacity stadium was designed by Spanish architecture practice Cruz y Ortiz and features a fan plaza, where spectators can enjoy music, entertainment and other live events.
