Queen's Award for Balcan

The lamp recycling services offered by Lincolnshire-based Balcan Engineering have been recognised with a Queen's Award for Enterprise.

The company won the Award in the Innovation category for the design and development of its advanced lamp recycling plant, which accepts and processes both pre-crushed and unbroken fluorescent and other waste lamps.

The plant, designed by managing director John Rinfret in 2001, breaks the lamps down into their component parts for recycling. This includes the mercury that they all contain and which is retrieved as a powder for safe handling and recycling at a specialist company.

Since 1980, the company has developed its own range of lamp crushers for use on-site and operates a mobile lamp crushing and disposal service for fluorescent tubes and other types of waste lamps. It also supplies storage containers for these products.

The Award citation specifically mentions the importance of on-site pre-crushing of lamps in reducing the volume by 80 per cent, so five times as many can be carried on a vehicle.

Commenting, Rinfret said: '”We particularly appreciate our pre-crushing services and equipment being highlighted as there is considerable misinformation in the industry about the current legal status of this type of equipment and service.”

He added: “We were sure that we had developed one of the most original, versatile and environmentally-friendly solutions to lamp disposal and we are delighted and proud to have this officially recognised with this Award.

“Every member of our 16 staff has made a contribution to our success.”

Picture shows the volume comparison between whole and pre-crushed lamps. 16 sacks contain the crushed debris of 2,816 x 4ft slimline fluorescent tubes in the bottom section of the rack, the three above contain 2,000 whole lamps
