Philips Fan Fest record

Philips Electronics celebrated its own World Cup victory last month. Since the tournament started on 9 June, an unprecedented 18 million people watched the games on giant Philips screens located in all 12 German host cities.

The audience, believed to be a world sports record, represents one fifth of the entire German population and over five times the total number of stadium attendees for the entire tournament.

The largest Fan Fests were the Germany vs. Italy semi-final on 4 July, attracting over one million people to the Brandenburg Gate event in Berlin, where Philips erected the World's largest Ambilight screen, measuring 77sq m, with full ambient backlight.

Both Germany's 3rd place play-off victory and the final itself between France and Italy attracted over one million to each game, with ten million fans in total enjoying the Berlin events alone, in addition to the millions more watching at the other Fan Fests around the country.

As official partner to the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, Philips installed over 34 purpose-built giant screens at 15 locations across Germany, with a combined video screen size of over 8,000sq m, enough to cover an entire football pitch.

Internationally, Philips hosted similar events in Brazil where over 20,000 people watched each of Brazil's games at a specially constructed screen in Sao Paolo's Vila da Copa square.
