Aaask domes beating the big freeze

Two of the UK's biggest football clubs are set to beat a potential big freeze by using huge inflatable domes for team training.

Celtic has been using such a mobile training dome for the last four years at its Barrowfield training ground and former manager Martin O'Neill has now persuaded his new club Aston Villa to purchase one too.

Developed and manufactured by Glasgow-based AAASK, the AAASK Real Turf Training Dome is inflated by hot air to provide a safe environment for players to undergo team training. It not only offers protection from ground frost but also provides a warm atmosphere that lessens the chances of players picking up muscle injuries.

The new 60m x 45m cover for Villa's Bodymoor Heath training ground can be inflated quickly by two heaters in anticipation of any cold snap.

O'Neill commented: “We are bringing in the dome so that we can continue to train during frosty periods. Traditional covers on the pitch at Celtic would handle minus two or three, but when it got colder than that, they were not enough. That's why we went for the inflatable dome.”

AAASK managing director Ken Thomson said: “Obviously the domes can be utilised for other sports such as tennis and can be used in a wide variety of other applications where ground protection is required.”

As an example, smaller versions of the domes have been used as mobile greenhouses by being sited around worn goalmouth areas of football grounds to allow e the seeding and germination of grass during the cold winter months.
