Brothers heated discussion with council

A Somerset cider maker is cranking up the heat at a Mendip swimming pool in one of the first projects of its kind in the country.

Mendip District Council (MDC) has teamed up with Shepton Mallet-based Brothers Drinks - makers of Festival Strength Pear Cider, Pear Cider, Original Apple Cider and Strawberry & Pear Cider - in an innovative project to warm Shepton Mallet's lido using recycled heat.

This year is the first time that the open air pool has used the specially built system, which uses excess heat from the Brothers Drinks factory only 30m away.

The heat, which is produced when the factory chills its drinks, is harnessed and warms the water as passes through a system of pipes before being returned to the pool.

Within days of the system going live, the process was seen to have increased the temperature of the water by more than 10 degrees. Studies show that in future years, Shepton's lido will be able to get at least 40 per cent of its heat in this fashion.

The project is the latest part of a £500,000 make-over of the facility, which has already seen the installation of a new children's play area, green area and a revamp of the changing rooms and pool.
