ss Great Britain to be a dry ship

Launched in 1843, Brunel's ss Great Britain was returned to Bristol as a hulk in 1970 and has recently been undergoing a £11.3m conservation programme.

To stop further deterioration of the ship's hull, the 100m long structure is surrounded at waterline level by a glass plate covered by a thin layer of water, this forming the roof of a huge dehumidified chamber.

Cambridgeshire-based humidity experts Munters were asked to create a conservation system for the vessel which would dehumidify the lower hull below the glass plate and the inside of the ship itself to provide a controlled dry environment and prevent further corrosion of the iron.

The company installed two air handling units, one in the dry dock in which the ship stands and another inside the boiler room, the latter involving individual components - some of them weighing up to 1 tonne - being manhandled through the length of the ship and assembled in situ.

Each completed unit is about 8m long, 3m high and weighs 8 tonnes, and the one in the dry dock has a number of double-glazed viewing panels to let visitors see it working.

They operate by using drying wheels, called rotors, which contain small air ducts with a very large contact surface, the latter treated with a substance - such as silica gel - which easily absorbs moisture.

Work on the project started on site last year and was completed in time for the 're-launch' celebrations in July.

The ss Great Britain now joins preservation projects at - amongst others - the British Museum, the British Film Institute, Hampton Court Palace and the National Maritime Museum in which Munters have had an involvement.
