Digistar visible at new planetarium

Birmingham's first Planetarium opens in December as the centrepiece of a £2m upgrade for the Thinktank science museum at Millennium Point.

The UK's first purpose built digital planetarium, it will seat up to 70 visitors per show - with additional room for four wheelchairs - under a projection dome 10m in diameter, inclined 15 degrees towards the front, with matched reclined seating.

It will also house Digistar 3, the latest in full-dome digital technology by Evans & Sutherland.

The museum says that, unlike traditional planetariums, modern small planetariums have done away with the optical-mechanical star projector in the centre; the electro-mechanical slide projectors on the periphery; and an array of special effects projectors.

Digistar 3 is an all-in-one system, consisting of six high-resolution DLP video projectors blended together to fill the dome, all driven by a set of powerful PCs.

Custom-made software allows the operator to project literally any imagery - still or moving - onto the dome, correctly shaped through 360 degrees to create the impression of total immersion for the audience.

Planetarium at Thinktank will offer science centre visitors a daily programme of presenter-led star shows, and narrated presentations on astronomy and the life sciences. Its most popular show is expected to be a daily live star show pointing out exactly what visitors can see in the sky that evening from their own back gardens. There will also be a version more suited for under 5s.
