Big new exhibit at Chester Zoo

Africa Roofing UK has created Europe's largest Fibre-Thatch roof for the new Tsavo café at Chester Zoo.

The café needed a 1200sq. m. thatch roof that would both need no maintenance and keep its natural appearance and colour for many decades to come.

Africa Roofing UK completed the project within four weeks using its Fibre-Thatch Tiles product. These are made from UPVC Polymer, which has a minimum life expectancy of fifty years, and are fire retardant to a BS476 Part 7 Class 1Y standard. Unlike traditional thatch, the tiles aren't susceptible to rot, mould or decay and are suitable for large surfaces.

The work was carried out by stapling thousands of Fibre-Thatch Tiles onto more than five kilometres of battens that had previously been fixed onto the steel roof. This gave the café the appearance of natural 150mm thick roofing. On the verges the Fibre-Thatch was wrapped around to make the gable ends consistent with the thicker eave sections. To complete the job, a 52m colour matched resin cap was installed along the length of the ridge.

Africa Roofing UK is a subsidiary of the Breeze House Company, its products including tropical thatch buildings, summerhouses, gazebos, fences, kiosks, poles, posts, ropes, hand-woven blinds and Eucalyptus log flooring. It can also provide a DIY thatching system.
