Diabetes UK has launched an exciting new fundraising event for 2007.
The Big Tri is a fun and challenging indoor triathlon consisting of running, cycling and either rowing or swimming.
Gyms, health clubs and leisure centres nationwide are being encouraged to get their members to take part and help raise funds for Diabetes UK whilst raising awareness of diabetes.
There are more than two million people with diabetes in the UK and this number is increasing at an alarming rate.
Of these, 1.9 million have Type 2 diabetes, associated with lifestyle factors, and a further 750,000 have the condition but don't yet know it.
The good news is that physical activity and a well balanced diet can significantly reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in the first place.
For those who have already developed the condition, physical activity plays an essential part in its successful management and in preventing serious complications such as blindness and heart disease.
A gym signing up for The Big Tri will be helping Diabetes UK to promote healthy living, increase awareness of diabetes and raise vital funds to help fund research into better treatments and hopefully, one day, a cure. It will also be providing its members with a new and motivating challenge whilst helping them improve their fitness and protect their own health.
The Big Tri can be tailored to suit the facilities of a particular site and its members. Diabetes UK will provide a free Organisers' Pack, materials and all the support needed to make a Big Tri a big success.
