A fitness app to watch out for

A new community-driven fitness, diet and wellbeing app will allow trainers to track their clients’ activities, food intake and progress.

WatchFit aims to build communities around particular fitness and dietary plans. Users accumulate points when they follow a programme – by eating the correct meals and undertaking the right workouts – and these can then be measured against the progress of others who have also agreed to share their information.

Parisa Louie, who had the idea for the app, said the community and competitive aspects brought a sense of game-like fun and additional motivation. With a facility to upload pictures of meals consumed, Louie said the app provided “a great way for trainers, conditioning experts and sports coaches to keep tabs on clients and ensure they are following a prescribed plan”.

Louie said the app would also be a constantly evolving information hub as athletes, coaches and experts upload plans, programmes and other material. "WatchFit can be a port of call for anybody looking to read up on a particular subject, check out the latest thinking on a topic or to read the most current item from a genuine authority on a subject,” she said.

TV nutritionist Amanda Hamilton, former Gladiators star Diane 'Jet' Youdale and Olympic sprinter and medallist Jennifer Stoute are among the early experts to have supplied material for the app.

WatchFit will also be compatible with Apple’s new M7 motion sensing technology, meaning that rather than acting as a simple pedometer, the app will be able to gauge intensity of movement and differentiate between walking and jogging.

The app can be downloaded at the App Store here.
