Pendulum's modular stadium concept can grow with a community

Pendulum have won an award for their conceptual design of a modular stadium complex that is intended to provide a platform for economic development in growing communities.

The Future Stadia design won the 'Sports and Recreation Project (Concept)' category of the annual Rethinking the Future awards, which are aimed at identifying and promoting "outstanding work in the field of architecture and design across the world."

Pendulum's design proposes an initial 3,000 capacity stadium that can be increased in size to a maximum capacity of 10,000 with additional auxiliary elements that could be added over the course of six potential phases.

The first phase provides the "operational core" of the complex, with a single grandstand, cooking facilities, restrooms and administrative functions.

Subsequent additions would include a party deck and suites in phase 2, retractable seating and a bar in phase 3, standing seating and extended hospitality offerings in phase 4 and a digital façade, scoreboard and larger team store in phase five.

The final phase sees the completion of the stadium, a full functional support offering and an additional sports pitch outside but adjacent to the main stadium.

Discussing how the design could suit different locations, Pendulum said: "The inspiration for the overall aesthetic of the stadium is 'contextual fluidity'. The design can take on the shape that best suits the environment and context it will be sited within."
