Natural History Museum has embarked on a project which will turn the iconic museum's London location into a biologically diverse green space.

The Museum's five-acre site in South Kensington is being transformed into a welcoming and accessible green space, which will include new outdoor galleries.

As part of the Urban Nature Project, people will be able to learn about the diversity of life on Earth and how the planet is changing over time.

The galleries will also showcase the Museum's scientific research.

At the heart of the project is a new data platform, which is being created for the museum in partnership by global tech consultant, Thoughtworks, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The new Data Ecosystem will help accelerate the biodiversity monitoring already carried out by the museum.

Built using AWS technologies and utilising the AWS Cloud, the Museum can capture, store, combine and compare data in a "secure, resilient and scalable way".

The initiative is part of the Natural History Museum's ‘Urban Nature Project’, which aims to give people across the UK the motivation and tools to safeguard nature in towns and cities.

Richard Hinton, CIO, Natural History Museum, said: "The Urban Nature Project gives us the opportunity, through data, to advance research, to support education and help people to reassess humanity's impact on UK biodiversity.

"We are delighted to work with AWS and Thoughtworks on the delivery of this ambitious project."
